Nous voyons ainsi évoluer l'homme parmi ses pairs et ses rivaux, dont beaucoup ont partagé avec lui les mêmes expériences : une enfance difficile, une adolescence studieuse et une réussite sociale, mondaine et littéraire précoce.
A travers ses multiples et successives prises de position politiques, y compris celles qui paraissent mineures, on comprend qu'il s'exprime en réponse aux Danton, Marat, Pétion, Saint-Just, Fabre d'Eglantine, Camille Desmoulins, Hébert, Collot d'Herbois, dans un jeu de bascule permanent, sans pouvoir exercer une quelconque magistrature suprême. Lorsqu'il paraît enfin pouvoir y accéder, il est condamné hors la loi par ses collègues, le 9 thermidor 1794. Chacun le sait, aucune artère parisienne ne porte le nom de Robespierre, passé à la postérité comme l'archétype du monstre.
Sans l'absoudre de rien, sans l'accabler non plus, Jean-Clément Martin explique que cette réputation a été fabriquée par les thermidoriens qui, après l'avoir abattu, voulurent se dédouaner de leur recours à la violence d'Etat : les 10 et 11 thermidor, qui voient l'exécution de Robespierre, de Couthon, de Saint-Just et de près de cent autres, servent en réalité à dénoncer " l'Incorruptible " comme le seul responsable de la " Terreur ".
Cette accusation a réécrit l'histoire de la Révolution et s'impose encore à nous. En historien, l'auteur démonte les mythes et la légende noire pour retrouver l'homme. Une démonstration sans faille et un livre à l'image de Robespierre : éminemment politique.
